The reconstruction of Ta Dzong and the development of the National Museum of Bhutan started in 1968. Before that, this watchtower was used as a protective shield against the Tibetan soldiers. It was also used as a shelter for the Bhutanese soldiers who were fighting against the rival army.
Due to lack of maintenance, this place was in ruins during the 1950s but with the maintenance initiatives adopted by Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the watchtower was turned into the National Museum of Bhutan. After the construction, it was once again destroyed during the 2011 earthquake and later was reconstructed in 2016. This place now holds the rich history of Bhutan with more than 3000 Bhutanese artworks and other artifacts.
The National Museum of Bhutan is situated above the Paro Dzong and the entry timings for this museum vary depending on the seasons. During the summer season, the opening time is between 9 am to 5 pm. However, during winter the museum closes at 4 pm. Along with the opening hours, you also need to know about the time when the ticket counter closes. Herein, during summer the counter closes at 4: 30 and at 3: 30 during winter.
To explore the premises of the national museum, tourists need to pay an entry fee as well. The entry fee for tourists coming from SAARC countries is Nu. 25 whereas, the entry fee is Nu. 150 for non-SAARC country citizens. Herein, the local people also have to pay Nu. 10 to enter the museum.
