Tachog Lhakhang Old Bridge is a lesser-known attraction in Paro, Bhutan. There are various wondrous bridges in Bhutan and this is one of them, which will surely awe you with its spectacular masonry. This suspension bridge also known as the Iron Chain Bridge of Bhutan is almost 600 years old. Only iron and wood were used to create this bridge which is also believed to be the first bridge built in the country. During your visit to this bridge, you will surely be amazed to capture the mesmerizing views of the lush green surroundings and the crystal clear river flowing through the mountains.
The history of Tachog Lhakhang Old Bridge is rooted in the Great Iron Bridge Builder of Tibet and Bhutan, the legendary Thangtong Gyalpo. He was an engineer and wonder-working saint who was the first one to use iron chains to build bridges across Bhutan. The bridges that were built by him are still used today by the Bhutanese people and this Tachog Old Bridge is just one of them.
However, during 1969 the old bridge was flushed away due to a devastating flood. Later, the bridge was restored to maintain the legacy and rich history related to Thangtong Gyalpo. Currently, this bridge is adorned with colorful Buddhist prayer flags, where you can cherish the six-century-old history and the timeless architectural extravaganza.
Tourists don't have to pay any entry fees to visit this bridge. However, entry to this bridge and the nearby Lhakhang is restricted which is why, you need to get prior permission from the authorities to explore the sightseeing attraction freely. However, the bridge is open throughout the week from morning 8 to evening 5. So you can schedule a trip to this bridge and be amazed at the stunning views.
Once you cross the old iron bridge, the mystical trail towards Tachog Lhakhang starts. This is a stunning private monastery which is operated by the descendants of the legendary Thangtong Gyalpo. Being a private monastery, free entry to this monastery is prohibited. Henceforth, you need to take due permission from the monks here for a visit. During your visit to this temple, you can witness various ancient books and stunning statues.
There are two watchtowers at both ends of the old bridge, which are worth visiting. The old watchtowers with stunning architecture are perfect locations to witness the breathtaking beauty of the surroundings. The watchtowers here are also adorned with beautiful paintings.
Once you cross the historic bridge, you will get a spectacular view of the Pa Chhu River flowing through the lofty mountains. Here you can spend some peaceful time while soaking in the serene ambiance. You can also witness prayer wheels and a small cave outside the towers.
