Taktsang or Tiger's Nest Monastery is one of the cultural icons and most revered spiritual sites across the Himalayan kingdom. This historical monastery located in the Paro district has been a major attraction for tourists for ages. Located at an altitude of 3,120 m above sea level, this monastery clings to a rock that is almost 800 m higher from the valley. The history of the Tiger's Nest can be dated back to the 8th century when Guru Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche visited the spot to meditate. It is believed that a tigress carried Guru Rinpoche on his back to Taktsang. Legend also has it that this tigress was a consort of Guru Rinpoche. At the very site of the monastery, he meditated and also emerged into eight incarnations.
From then this monastery and its caves have become one of the most important spiritual sites in the Himalayan Buddhist world. The first temple on this site was built in 1645 and from this, the monastery has undergone various renovations. Currently, there is a main Lhakhang, four temples, and a prayer wheel in this monastery.
The non-Bhutanese tourists who want to explore the temples of Tiger's Nest have to pay an entry fee of 2, 000 Nu. Please note that the children who are below 18 years old only have to pay 50% of the entry fees. On the other hand, children who are 5 years or below do not have to pay any fees to visit the monastery.

With a comfortable pace, it may take you around 3 hours to climb Tiger's Nest. However, if you're a regular trekker or have experience then you can even complete it within 2 hours.
To reach the site, you have to walk almost 4 km and tourists also have the option to ride a horse for climbing. The scenic viewpoint that you will reach after the climb is totally amazing with a clear view of the monastery and the entire Paro valley. Once you have reached the viewpoint, you have to ascend some steps to reach the entrance of the monastery. The amazing architecture and fluttering prayer flags add a unique charm to this place.
